Downtown: Where to watch the game

March 2nd, 2009 · 6 Comments

I wish Vancouver had better pubs. I love those old, cozy English style pubs where you know there’s a story about everything in the place. The Vancouver pubs/bars are so much more polished. But that’s a conversation for another post because when a girl wants a beer and the Canucks on PPV, she still needs a place to watch.

Friday it was the Canucks vs. Tampa Bay, and the location was the Kingston Taphouse & Grill, located in the Kingston Hotel downtown on Richards at Robson.

The place was packed. We were lucky enough to get the last table for two in the house. Here’s what the Kingston has going for it:

- It’s HUGE and will fit big groups. It’s two floors, with the bottom floor having private rooms and a separate bar.
- They cater to “game day” and can handle the crowd, so the kitchen and bar can keep up to demand
- There are TVs everywhere. Everywhere you look there’s at least one television. Plus, game audio is put through the speakers so you can watch and listen to the game.
- As far as $17 nachos go, the Kingston’s are huge with lots of cheese and guacamole. 3-4 people could share a plate, easy.

The Kingston is nicely located downtown, so I’ll often meet-up with people for a quick drink -  a good meeting spot to get the evening started and to watch the game.

I also recommend the veggie burger at the Kingston. If memory serves correctly, I believe it is a mushroom-based patty.

Geez… I should have dropped by. :) I was heading home from the office just as the game was starting. :P

Awesome place to go for the game, not to mention that the Team 1040 also will broadcast from the Kingston quite often before home games!

I also wished that the pubs were more like the English ones where there are no hostess and no waiters. If you want a drink, just go to the bar and get it!

I didn’t know the Team 1040 broadcast from there – cool.

As a Victoria (B.C.) native, the pubs are the biggest thing i miss while in Vancouver.
