Kitsilano Eats: Gastropod (go while you still can!)

April 1st, 2009 · 3 Comments

The fantastic news: Kitsilano will soon have a Thai Restaurant to talk about in Maenam, led by Chef Angus An.

The sad news: Angus An’s restaurant Gastropod will be closing at the end of April, although it will continue on as a catering business.

Overall, Gastropod is am amazing experience. Every time I go it’s excellent service and lovely food. But really, everyone MUST go to Gastropod for one dish: oysters with horseradish snow.

Oh my god. The first time I had this dish the stars aligned, it was THAT good. I ordered a second serving to make sure everyone at the table tasted the dish. You pop this amazingly fresh oyster into your mouth and then it explodes in your mouth as you taste the light, fresh horseradish “snow.”  Heaven.

I am going back this weekend for the oysters and will probably go back at least one more time. And now, you can order the oysters by the piece – even better.

Gastropod – enjoy it while it’s here!

+1 on the oysters – they are yummy.

I’ll be sad to see Gastropod go but i’m never too concerned when a food establishment closes it’s doors and another is on the way. I love the variety. Not involved in the food industry myself, but i also think it might be a nice break for the people running them to try something new.

As long as we have tastey honest fare and local establishments are well-supported I’m happy!

[...] Gastropod is no more, but the owners have given us Maenam Thai Restaurant, specializing in authentic Thai food and a late night menu until 2am! Most Kitsilano places shut down early, around 10pm. A good late night place is perfect for late night me. [...]

I somehow missed this post. Gastropod closed?! Why? The nostalgia in me is not happy to hear this news. I love going back to restaurants that invoke happy memories.
