Vancouver Good Weekender: Seattle

May 3rd, 2009 · 3 Comments

I try to hang out in Seattle at least twice a year. 2009 trip #1 was this past week. Here’s the low-down on my latest weekend.

The base

Hotel Max – a modern, moderately priced hotel in the heart of downtown Seattle and walking distance to everything. I caught a great deal and booked a room with parking and wi-fi for $99/night.

I would recommend the Hotel Max and much preferred it to the Ace Hotel in Seattle, the place I stayed at my last time. The Ace in Portland is…ace, but I was disappointed in the Seattle location.

The shops

Filson – I huffed the 30 minute walk to the flagship store for Filson, maker of these gorgeous handcrafted, Seattle-made bags. Beautiful store, but take a cab if you go. And I found the prices of Filson Bags in Vancouver comparable so ended up window shoping only.

Nordstrom Rack (1601 2nd Ave, Seattle) – There is nothing like the Nordstrom Rack. I find it hit or miss for ladies wear, but it’s a gold mine for men’s clothing. Ties, belts, cufflinks, shirts, shoes – great prices on lots of high-end items.

Anthropologie – Yes, it’s a chain. But I love this store. One day I will have doors and furniture that need new knobs and I will buy them at Anthropologie! The store also carries the excellent Luxe City Guides, which I have yet to see in Vancouver.

The food

This particular trip was a small love fest for Tom Douglas restaurants, including brunch at Etta’s at Pike Place Market and Serious Pie pizza, which was outstanding. I will return to Serious Pie over and over and over again for their pizza. We had a roasted chanterelle and truffle cheese pizza atop a thick, but airy and light artisan crust. Best pizza ever.

Cafe Campagne – Lovely French fare right by the Pike Place Market.

The coffee

One of my favourites is Victrola, which makes a delicious espresso I am still thinking about.

We were also going to B&O Espresso but couldn’t find parking so decided to take off. B&O is also known for their desserts. Next time.

Next time. . .

I will find a way into a dinner at Salumi.

I’m pretty sure the Vancouver Chapters on Robson street has the Luxe guides in the maps section on the second floor.

Thanks for the post Angie! I am going to be a Seattle weekender today to go to Anthropologie and can’t wait to try Serious Pie too!
