Downtown Sweets: Bacchus High Tea at the Wedgewood Hotel

December 24th, 2009 · 3 Comments

My friends and I have a wonderful holiday tradition: our annual gift exchange over high tea at the Wedgewood Hotel.

There’s something incredibly luxurious about high tea at the Wedgewood Hotel’s Bacchus Restaurant. I think it’s a combination of the plush seats, gorgeous flower arrangements, and dressed up patrons that makes the atmosphere so special. During my last visit, us girls wore our lovely headpieces and spied several ladies with similarly fabulous hats and outfits.

The tea selection is small, but good. I alternate between lavender earl grey, pear tree green, or thunderbolt darjeeling. And on the tray? Smoked salmon pinwheels, shrimp salad and cucumber finger sandwiches, amazing scones with devonshire cream, fruit tarts, bakewell tarts, chocolate eclairs, and a lemon chiffon cake.

I even have a picture! For my blog, this is a rare occurrence:

The food is yummy, especially the scones, but I’d say the food and teas are slightly better at other high tea establishments such as Secret Garden. If you’re a high tea purist, note that there’s no traditional china used either. And at $39 a person, it’s not the cheapest option in town.

However, it’s at the amazing Wedgewood Hotel. Go for the good food and tea, but the even better ambience. It’s worth it – once a year, anyways.

The google map is in the works for 2010! On photos, I’ll see what happens. I’m not big on taking pictures of my food, but I do want to get more images onto the blog. Stay tuned.
