West End Eats: La Belle Patate

June 16th, 2010 · 4 Comments

I was in the West End today, a ‘hood I haven’t been to in years, it seems! I had to go find something to eat to honour such an occasion. While La Brasserie and Mis Trucos were tempting (and on the list!), I was solo and tired so opted for something much more casual – [...]

Main Street Cheap Eats: Au Petit Cafe and Pho Tan Vietnamese

June 7th, 2010 · No Comments

The past two weekends have been all about Vietnamese Saturday lunch – both on Main St. While a bowl of steaming Pho is always good, I’m often partial to the vermicelli noodle bowls – strings of thin vermicelli, thinly sliced veggies (typically lettuce, cucumber, carrot, bean sprout), a grilled meat, & fried spring rolls all [...]

Gastown Eats: Acme Cafe

June 4th, 2010 · 4 Comments

There’s a new cafe in town that everyone’s talking about. Part modern diner, part coffee stop, Acme Cafe is in the slightly dodgy part of Gastown, east of the Woodwards building. It’s well worth the extra steps, especially as a breakfast or lunch spot. Details: Open the door to the cafe and you’re greeted with [...]

Gastown Eats and Drinks: The Pourhouse

June 3rd, 2010 · 3 Comments

Next time you’re in Gastown go to the Pourhouse, a restaurant and bar serving comforting, delicious food with a killer bar. I’ve been to the Pourhouse a few times now, each experience memorable: The first time at the Pourhouse was Saturday brunch last fall. I remember the Americano I ordered was great – the first [...]

Downtown / Yaletown / Kitsilano Eats: The Glowbal Group Restaurants

May 28th, 2010 · 2 Comments

While most people consider chains to be places of the same name – Earls, Milestones, Joey’s, etc…the Glowbal Group is also a local chain of restaurants, but each with a different theme, cuisine, and style. In general, I have mixed feelings about the chain, but there’s a lot of good with the average, so let’s [...]

Kitsilano Eats: Moderne Burger

May 16th, 2010 · 3 Comments

Moderne Burger is the epitome of a successful business that’s run well  on the owners’ terms. The kitchen opens at noon and closes at 7:45pm. I don’t even start thinking about dinner until 8:30pm, so I’ve never made it there for dinner. The restaurant also closes on Mondays and all holiday weekends. Frustrating when I [...]

Downtown / Coal Harbour Lunch Eats: Giovane Cafe Bakery & Deli

May 14th, 2010 · 1 Comment

I dropped by Italian inspired cafe Giovane today, the casual breakfast & lunch spot inside the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel. At 1pm it was still bustling with tourists, solo diners, and business meetings happening in the bright, open restaurant space. Some highlights: The menu includes breakfast from 6am-11am, a lunch menu of pizza, soup, salad, [...]

Mount Pleasant /East Van Cheap Eats: Sushiyama

May 6th, 2010 · No Comments

This is my long overdue post on Sushiyama. I’ve only been a couple times, but this was far and above THE Japanese restaurant of choice by my wonderful, former team at Radical Entertainment. I suspect it was a favourite because it’s  cheap to reasonably priced, the portions are good, the fish is fresh, and there’s [...]

Gastown Eats: Boneta Restaurant

April 18th, 2010 · No Comments

While Gastown is full of great restaurants now, a few years ago this wasn’t the case. Boneta opened in the summer of 2007 and quickly became a must-try restaurant. During my visits to Boneta over the past few years, my most memorable impressions include: There’s always a great scallop dish on the menu Boneta attracts [...]

Downtown Eats: Oru Asian Bistro

March 30th, 2010 · 1 Comment

I joined the ladies from the Downtown Networking Association for dinner last week at Oru Asian Bistro, the main restaurant at the newly opened Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel. At the helm is Executive Chef is David Wong, who recently represented Canada at the 2009 Bocuse D’or. The idea of Oru is pan-Asian cuisine, but NOT [...]
